Eltronic FuelTech partners with Aarhus University in new innovation project for development of ammonia release and mitigation system

We are pleased to announce that Eltronic FuelTech is initiating the AMAZE innovation project in collaboration with Aarhus University's Department of Biological & Chemical Engineering (BCE) and Department of Mechanical and Production Engineering (MPE).

Funded by the Danish Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP), the ambitious Ammonia Management And Zero Emission (AMAZE) innovation project aims to develop an advanced system for minimizing ammonia emissions from dual-fuel vessels. The joint project will commence in February 2025 and run until the end of 2027.

Advancing ammonia as a clean, sustainable, and safe maritime fuel

The AMAZE project seeks to address key challenges in adopting ammonia as a fuel for the shipping industry. The main aim of the project is to develop a full-scale prototype solution to minimize ammonia emissions to below 25ppm from ships operating on dual fuel technology.

As a carbon-neutral fuel, ammonia produces no CO2 emissions when burned and can be sustainably produced from renewable energy sources. This makes ammonia a promising alternative marine fuel, presenting a valuable opportunity to reduce the environmental footprint of maritime transportation.

Industry and academia in joint venture

The innovation project represents a strong collaboration between industry and academia. By integrating lab-scale systems with advanced CFD simulations, the expected outcome of the project is a scalable and practical prototype.

This initiative is driven by Eltronic FuelTech and carried out in cooperation with Aarhus University, ensuring a seamless fusion of our extensive industry expertise and academic insights.

Dedicating 14,000 innovation hours across all engineering disciplines

Building on our experience from the AEngine ammonia innovation project, we will leverage our industry expertise and capabilities in the AMAZE project to develop a full-scale test system for Aarhus University’s test site in Foulum near Viborg. The project collaboration will begin with lab-scale tests, simulations, and experiments led by our partners at Aarhus University, laying the groundwork for our full-scale system development.

Our R&D team at Eltronic FuelTech will engage all engineering disciplines in the project, including process engineering, mechanical engineering, mechanical construction, electrical & software engineering, risk management, documentation, assembly and test. Over the next three years, our R&D team is committed to dedicating approximately 14,000 work hours to ensure the success of the project.

At Eltronic FuelTech, we are eager to embark on this journey and look forward to playing a crucial role, in collaboration with our partners at Aarhus University. This project represents a significant step toward greener maritime operations, reinforcing the commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility.
